The12th General Assembly of Diazoma Association

12th General Assembly of DIAZOMA

September 18-22, 2019

Naxos and Delos

Following the decision of the board of directors of the association DIAZOMA of 19 December 2017, the 12th general assembly of the association will take place in the islands of Naxos and Delos from Wednesday 18 to Sunday 22 September 2019.

The island of Naxos was chosen in conjunction with the efforts made by the Association to develop a cultural route on Naxos too, a route that would revolve around the significant cultural monuments of the island. Utilizing the fruits of the synergies between citizens, institutions, donors and European funding programs, DIAZOMA plans and proposes the implementation of new holistic cultural tourism programs with the purpose of integrating monuments in everyday life, as well as furthering sustainable development. Naxos is an ideal candidate for the planning and implementation of such a program, being rich in monuments of all historical periods which reflect its long history.

Our association, taking advantage of the know-how acquired, will entrust the masterplan of the cultural route of Naxos to the STADION SA development studies office. This study will be based on the many years of work of Professor Vassilis Lambrinoudakis to highlight the historical past of the island. The study will be presented to the Naxos General Assembly and will be offered to residents and authorities of the island, with a view to its integration into the next NSRF, which should begin in 2021.

During these five days, we will visit major archaeological sites on the island of Naxos. As an indication, we mention the temple of Apollo (Portara) in the islet of Palatia in Chora, the medieval castle and archaeological museum of Naxos, the sanctuary of Demeter in Sagri, the sanctuary of Yria, the ancient quarry and the statue of Dionysus at Apollonos.

In addition, on the archaeological site of Yria we will have the opportunity to enjoy a brief musical event organized by the talented musician and founder of the Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra, Dionysis Grammenos. During our trip to Naxos, we will also visit the picturesque village of Aperanthos.

On Friday, September 20, 2019, we will sail to the beautiful island of Delos, where we will visit the archaeological site and the museum of the island. The formalities of DIAZOMA’s 12th General Assembly (verification of the quorum – election of the office) will take place in the ancient theater of Delos. On the archaeological site, we will be able to visit the contemporary sculpture exhibition of the British artist Antony Gormley, fruit of the collaboration of the Cyclades Ephorate of Antiquities and the NEON organization. Our visit to the theater will be accompanied by another musical event proposed by Dionysis Grammenos.

We remind you that, following the cooperation with the French Archaeological School and relying on the scientific work done so far, DIAZOMA entrusted the  civil engineer Konstantinos Zambas with the study of the restoration of the ancient theater of Delos. The cost of the study was covered by the money donated to the theater money box (electronic bank account) and mainly by the sponsorship of OPAP SA. The study is now completed and has been approved by the Central Archaeological Council. Recently, efforts have also been made to integrate the implementation of the rehabilitation study into a European funding program.

The main part of the work of our General Assembly will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2019 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm in the specially equipped amphitheater of the Naxos City Hall. On Saturday afternoon, we will enjoy traditional dances and songs of the island presented by local associations and musicians in the main square of Naxos harbor (Mandilara Square). We will also have the opportunity to taste traditional dishes proposed by the producers of the island.

The travel agency SOMEWHERE WE KNOW will be responsible for the organization of the 12th General Assembly of DIAZOMA.
