A meeting was held on November 9, 2018 between the Mayor of Sparta, Mr. Evangelos Valiotis, and the President of the DIAZOMA Association, Stavros Benos. The theme of the meeting was the restoration of the ancient theater of Sparta.
Also present at the meeting were Mr. Georgios Yaxoglou, architect and founding member of the association, Mr. Efstathios Bekiaris, President of the Association of Friends for the Restoration of the Ancient Theater of Sparta “Gitiadas”, his collaborators and the Deputy Mayor, Mr. Panayiotis Argyropoulos.
The discussion focused on the actions undertaken thanks to the $ 100,000 donation made by the J.M. Kaplan US Foundation to carry out the first phase of the work of the restoration of the historic monument. It should be noted that this is the second sponsorship of an ancient theater in Greece by this American foundation.
Mr. Benos also mentioned that the annual meeting of the corporate members of DIAZOMA will be held next year in Sparta from April 5 to 7, 2019.
The Mayor of Sparta expressed the wish that the competent services of the Ministry of Culture and Sports make the most of the donation of the American Foundation. In addition, he thanked the representatives of the association, and in particular Mr. Benos, for having taken the initiative to propose the realization of this important project as well as to have given all their assistance and advice during these years for a project which is in the interest of the local community but also of all.
