The Great Petros Themelis and the Wonder of Ancient Messene
“We set the bar at sustainable development, which combines an improved tourism product with environmental protection, the enhancement of our cultural heritage, its connection with the agri-food sector, all underpinned by the rationale of becoming the best in the world at protecting the environment. That is where the bar must be set for our country, and we cannot compromise with anything less.” With these words, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis opened his address at the Messinia Chamber of Commerce event on “The Impact of Investment in Local Communities: The Costa Navarino Example”, which took place in Kalamata last Saturday.
The Prime Minister continued his address with the following reference: “…Or whether we also naturally allude to the enhancement of the region’s vast cultural wealth, and here I would like to give a special mention to the significant part played by two people: Professor Themelis and Mr. Stavros Benos. Two men who have given their heart and soul to this enhancement: Mr. Themelis in enhancing and promoting the archaeological site of Ancient Messene on the one hand, Mr. Stavros Benos doing excellent work throughout the entire country on the other. Proving that we can achieve a new model of cooperation between the private sector, the state, and all the organizations that spring forth from civil society when we all work together, collaboratively, for the same common purpose. So, this diffusion of wealth throughout the entire local community is the second thing I would like you to take on board, as regards the importance I attach to this investment.”
